Overlooking a public beach on Kauai's south shore, this private family home employs oversized sliding doors, a custom rainscreen, and layered plantings to provide privacy when desired. Lighting enhances the home’s material palette of coral-colored concrete, peeled ohia logs, and dark tile that mimics nearby lava flows. Inside, the home's modest but thoughtful footprint welcomes family members and guests in a mix of comfortable private spaces and grander gathering spaces that open out to the warm ocean breezes.

Viewing platforms take advantage of city and water panoramas; lighting in the landscape was designed to enhance these views while remaining unobtrusive.

2016 IESNA Illumination Award of Merit
A series of interconnected pavilions make up this striking modern residence overlooking San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate. Balancing indoor and out and light with shadow, lighting is used to enhance architecture and views outward without calling attention to itself. State of the art fuel cell and solar panel technology is used along with other energy and resource-saving methods like passive cooling and greywater reclamation.

This wine country house is designed to take full advantage of its impressive site, as well as the magnificent views beyond towards rolling, oak-covered hills. Extra low-profile glazed windows and doors break down the barrier to the outside. Large, angled light-monitors filter additional light into the interior, creating a diffuse glow throughout.
The material palette was carefully chosen for minimal maintenance and graceful aging. It blends with the surrounding landscape and relies more on variation in finish and texture than on a range of different material choices. The Cor-ten paneled exterior cladding breaks down into a Cor-ten screen that runs along the landscaped entry and creates dappled shadows, mimicking those of the nearby oaks. Polished concrete entry walls flow into stairs and floors of concrete through the house and give way to a retaining wall of corduroy patterned board-formed concrete in the private bath and garden beyond.

Commandingly sited atop the highest floors of the five-star St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco, this rare two-story penthouse boasts 360-degree views of the city. One of the world's most extraordinary residences, it showcases the ultimate in bespoke architectural design, innovative infrastructure and perfectly integrated architectural lighting features. The seamless design strategy, a driving factor for the architecture, also drove many lighting design decisions. Due to the nature of the project, budget wasn't a concern, but the use of highly efficient sources throughout to achieve elegant yet sustainable results was a client requirement, implemented by the design team.

Near SFMoMA, this penthouse offers space for entertaining and acts as a blank canvas allowing for the owner's artistic evolution. The seamless integration of lighting with architecture provides layers of light for general activities and the ability to adapt to the ever-changing modern art collection. Blurring traditional roles, we developed and detailed custom recessed metal slots and boxes to house lengths of busway and, in some cases, indirect up lighting, creating custom recessed luminaries tailored to the architectural design. Lighting becomes art with fiber optic tentacles in the guest bath and glass spheres dividing the living and dining areas.
